Triangle of Sadness wins European Film Prize Amsterdam wants to ban smoking weed in parts of the city center

The satire “Triangle of Sadness” about a luxury cruise won four prizes at the European Film Awards. The production was awarded as the best European film of the year.

Director Ruben Östlund also received the awards for Best Director and Best Screenplay on Saturday evening in the Icelandic capital Reykjavik. The film tells of a journey that ends differently than planned.

One of the leading actors, Zlatko Burić, was also awarded Best Actor. The best actress award went to Vicky Krieps from Luxembourg for her role in the drama “Corsage”, in which she can be seen as Sisi. Cologne comedienne Meltem Kaptan was also nominated in the category, and the 42-year-old left empty-handed.

The European Film Prize is one of the most prestigious awards in the film industry. The approximately 4,400 members of the film academy could vote for prize winners in a number of categories, similar to the Oscars in the US.

“The Perfect Boss” with actor Javier Bardem was awarded the prize for best comedy. The prize for the best documentary went to Mariupolis 2 by Mantas Kvedaravičius. Ukraine’s film producers were also honored.

German director Margarethe von Trotta (“Hannah Arendt”) was honored for her life’s work, Italian Marco Bellocchio (“Exterior Night”) for innovative storytelling and Palestinian director Elia Suleiman (“Vom Giessen des Lemonbaums”) for his services to the world cinema.

A video message arrived from Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission. Your European Green Deal climate protection program has received a sustainability award. The European Film Prize is usually awarded alternately in Berlin and another European city. Last year, the drama “Quo Vadis, Aida?” about the Srebrenica massacre was voted best European film of the year. (sda/dpa)
