According to calculations by the health authorities, the extremely hot summer in France this year has cost the lives of around 10,000.

Between June 1 and September 15, there were 10,420 more deaths than normal for that period, authorities said in Paris on Tuesday. That is an increase of 6.1 percent. During the three heat waves in the summer, there were even 16.7 percent more deaths than average. The elderly aged 75 and older were particularly affected. Seven fatal work accidents were also attributed to the intense heat. After the record summer of 2003, the summer of 2022 was the second warmest in France since 1900.

The balance underlines the importance of preparing in advance for the consequences of heat waves, according to health authorities. It also shows the need to further develop climate change adaptation strategies to mitigate the impacts across the country. Heat waves are no longer an exception and have a major impact on health.
