Friends die in holiday home just before Halloween

Three friends from America wanted to celebrate the Day of the Dead in Mexico. Kandace F.* (†28), Jordan M.* (†28), and Courtez H.* (†33) traveled to Mexico City in late October and rented an Airbnb. The night before Halloween, Kandace F. was on the phone with her boyfriend, who hadn’t come.

The American broadcaster Wavy reports that she felt sick and told her friend that something was wrong. Shortly afterwards, the connection dropped. Her boyfriend tried to reach out to Kandace F. again – without success.

He was very concerned and contacted the Airbnb host to make sure everything was okay. By then it was already too late. The friends lay lifeless in the shelter. It was unclear exactly how the Americans died. The autopsy results are now available. As a result: Apparently the friends died of carbon monoxide poisoning. How this is possible is now being further investigated.

The US got involved and investigating

In general, there are many unanswered questions. The families of the deceased are in despair. They went to Mexico specifically to talk to the local authorities. “The Mexican police were not very willing to provide information,” Jordan M.’s mother told WTKR broadcaster. She wasn’t even allowed to take her son’s personal belongings with her.

No one from the police has reportedly attempted to contact the deceased’s families, Kandace F.’s father said. The US embassy is now involved and investigating the matter. The bodies will be brought to the United States within days.

Jordan M. and Kandace F. have known each other since childhood. They went to the same school, graduated together. M. later became a teacher, moved to another city and befriended his colleague Courtez H. Kandace F. opened a candle shop. According to her mother, she was a “dreamer” who wanted to make the lives of others more beautiful. (lrc)
