Hundreds of climate activists blocked Schiphol airport in the Netherlands on Saturday. The people of the environmental organizations Greenpeace and Extinction Rebellion sat down in front of private jets and rode their bicycles around the site. However, the scheduled services were not affected.
The police tried to split up the groups – which were only partially successful. The climate activists rode around on their bicycles and some escaped arrest. Despite this, the Dutch police arrested hundreds of people:
A day before the UN Climate Change Conference
The action took place a day before the UN Climate Change Conference COP27 in Egypt. The protesters are calling for “fewer flights, more trains and a ban on unnecessary short-haul flights and private jets,” as Greenpeace’s Dewi Zloch said.
According to Greenpeace, the aim of the campaign was to make clear that greenhouse gas emissions from air traffic had to be reduced. Airport boss Ruud Sondag replied in an open letter that the airport is committed to emission-free airports by 2030 and climate neutral air traffic by 2050. (fwe)
