Polish leaders: Drinking women responsible for low birth rate Oil prices fall at the start of the week

Apparently a problem for certain politicians in Poland: women and alcohol.

The leader of Poland’s ruling Law and Justice party, Jaroslaw Kaczynski, has sparked outrage with statements about women who drink. The left-wing opposition alliance Lewica lodged an official complaint with the parliament’s ethics committee in Warsaw on Monday.

During a performance on Saturday, Kaczynski claimed that excessive drinking by younger women was responsible for Poland’s low birth rate. The statistical average birth rate there in 2020 was about 1.4 children per woman. In Switzerland the value was around 1.5 and in France 1.8.

“For example, if the situation continues that girls, young women, drink as much as their male peers until the age of 25, then there will be no children,” the 73-year-old said, according to the PAP agency. . In addition, Kaczynski claimed that men could drink excessively for 20 years before developing alcoholism, but women only for two years.

Left-wing politician Robert Biedron spoke of ‘shameful statements. Football star Robert Lewandowski’s (ex-Bayern Munich, now Barcelona) wife Anna Lewandowska wrote on Facebook: “Enough – I get annoyed when politicians falsely accuse women instead of seeing the real problems.” Fitness trainer Ewa Chodakowska – one of Poland’s best-known influencers – spoke of a “peak of hatred” against women.
