President Bolsonaro remains silent on Lula’s victory Lula outperforms Bolsonaro to become Brazil’s new president

After Brazil’s presidential election, incumbent Jair Bolsonaro initially did not comment on his defeat.

After his challenger Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s narrow election victory, people around him tried to talk to Bolsonaro, but he had already gone to sleep, Brazilian news portal “G1” reported Monday evening (local time). The information could not be verified.

It was previously feared that violence would break out after Lula’s narrow election victory. Like US President Donald Trump, Bolsonaro had repeatedly expressed doubts about the electoral system before the vote and indicated that he might not recognize the result. Key allies of the right-wing incumbent, such as Chamber of Deputies Speaker Artur Lira and Minas Gerais State Governor Romeu Zema, have already recognized Lula’s election victory.

Left-wing ex-president Lula (2003-2010) narrowly won the second round for the presidency in Latin America’s largest country. He received 50.90 percent of the vote on Sunday, the Electoral Office in Brasília announced. The right-wing incumbent Bolsonaro got 49.10 percent.
