At least 32 dead in India suspension bridge collapse Musk spreads conspiracy theory about attack on Paul Pelosi

Dozens of people have died when a suspension bridge collapsed over a river in western India, according to media reports. At least 32 are said to have been killed, citing local authorities. About 100 people were also injured. Many people are still missing.

The accident happened on Sunday evening (local time) in Morbi, Gujarat state, the Times of India newspaper and local media reported Sunday evening. Many victims fell in the water. A major rescue operation is underway. There were also helpers in boats. Gujarat Interior Minister Harsh Sanghavi said more than 70 people have been rescued.

The pedestrian bridge over the Machchhu River has recently reopened after renovation, it said. The building was about 100 years old. At the time of the collapse, many people were on the suspension bridge. Hundreds of people were mentioned in some media. “We are shocked. An investigation is underway,” Gujarat Labor Minister Brijesh Merja told NDTV.

Images and videos on social media show how the structure in the middle seems to be falling apart and several people clinging to keep from falling into the water.

There was initially no official information about the cause. Media reports said the structure may not have withstood the strain of too many people. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s office announced on Twitter that compensation would be paid to the families of the victims. (saw/sda/dpa)
