Man attacked with hammer by Nancy Pelosi – attacker targeted himself Japan braces for inflation with huge stimulus package

An attacker broke into the home of prominent American politician Nancy Pelosi and wounded her 82-year-old husband with a hammer.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives was not at home at the time. The position ranks third in the US political hierarchy, after President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. Biden condemned the attack as “disgusting” and linked it to aggressive Republican rhetoric from Donald Trump.

The man threatened Paul Pelosi’s life on Friday evening and demanded a meeting with the speaker of parliament, her spokesman said. Her husband underwent surgery for a skull fracture and serious injuries to his right arm and hands. Doctors expected him to make a full recovery.

Pelosi is constantly protected by bodyguards. She was in Washington Friday night while her husband stayed at the couple’s San Francisco home.

The 42-year-old attacker broke into Pelosis’s San Francisco home Friday night, Police Chief William Scott said. When police officers arrived, he repeatedly hit Paul Pelosi with a hammer in front of the officers. The attacker is in custody and the motive for the attack is under investigation, Scott said.

Nancy Pelosi's husband was attacked.

The attacker repeatedly said, “Where’s Nancy?” called, the “New York Times” and the “Washington Post” wrote, citing officials. American media found online profiles of the man, showing that he was interested in conspiracy theories, misinformation about the alleged danger of corona vaccines and Donald Trump’s lies about fraud in the 2020 presidential election.

CNN reported that Paul Pelosi himself called 911 on his phone. He could not immediately report the attack, but the employee of the emergency center heard what was happening in the background and sent the police. According to media reports, the man also wanted to tie up Paul Pelosi and wait for his wife to return.

Democrat Pelosi is a frequent target of verbal attacks from the American political right. Ex-President Trump has called her “Crazy Nancy” for years and has made her a hate figure for his supporters over the years.

When the US Capitol was stormed on January 6, 2021, Trump supporters searched for Pelosi and ransacked her office. Meanwhile, she tried to organize the protection of the building from a safe place, as recently published videos showed. In the current campaign for the Congressional election on November 8, radical Republicans are targeting their opponents for their alleged close ties to Pelosi.

During an election campaign in Philadelphia, Biden emphasized that the attackers in the Capitol “Where’s Nancy?” would have called. He accused the Republicans of brutalizing the political climate in the United States. “Which makes us think that a party can talk about stolen elections and that Covid is a lie – and that doesn’t affect people who may not be so balanced,” the president said. “There is too much political violence, too much hatred.”

Joe Biden commented on the attack.

On Friday, prominent Republicans denounced Trump Vice President Mike Pence and Senate Leader Mitch McConnell. House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy has reportedly contacted Pelosi personally. Trump posted Truth Social on his Twitter copy, but did not comment on the attack.

Glenn Youngkin, the Republican governor of Virginia, has been criticized for his comments about the attack during a campaign appearance for congressional candidate Yesli Vega. “There is no room for violence anywhere, but we will send her back to be with him in California,” Youngkin said, referring to Pelosi and her husband. Republicans stand a good chance of regaining a majority in the House of Representatives in the election. Pelosi would then have to retire. (sda/dpa)
