One-year-old Danka disappeared in Serbia on March 26.

One-year-old Danka is with her mother in Banjsko Polje, a Serbian suburb near Bor, on March 26, playing in the garden of a house belonging to the family. When the mother goes inside to get a glass of water, Danka disappears.

After 90 minutes, the mother alerted the girl’s father and eventually the police. Since then, the entire country has been searching for the girl, and the case has dominated the front pages of Serbian media.

Serb claims to have seen Danka in Vienna

Since then, thousands of helpers and police officers with sniffer dogs have been on duty. The area is being searched with drones and helicopters. A seven-kilometre-long sewer tunnel was also drained and searched. The surrounding houses are searched, but the girl remains missing.

A week later, the case takes a new turn: a Serb living in Vienna thinks he has seen the girl on the street. Accompanied by two women. The man films the girl and informs the Serbian authorities – and not the Austrian ones.

Interpol and the Vienna police are investigating

The man described the scene in an email to authorities: “Around 8 p.m. I was leaving the subway station and saw a child running away screaming. First I observed and then started recording. Everything happened at a tram stop. There were two women with the child talking to each other in Romanian. They called the child by a name, I didn’t understand what, but the girl didn’t react at all.”

It will take some time before Interpol and the Austrian police are deployed. Interpol has now taken over the investigation and the police in Vienna are currently working to identify the girl in the video. Interpol has already published a search notice on its website.
