Caught red-handed: On Sunday evening, the Verbania carabinieri were able to arrest a 26-year-old man with a criminal record who was brutally raping a woman, as the Italian newspaper ‘Ansa’ reports. At 2 a.m., an emergency call was received in Domodossola (I), not far from the Swiss border. A Chinese tourist reported how a man dragged a woman into the basement of a building near the train station. He tried to prevent the crime himself. But after this failed, he called 911. As another video from surveillance cameras shows, it was he who led emergency services to the crime scene.
The carabinieri were able to arrest the Senegalese resident during the crime. The victim is a 60-year-old in the care of social services and was sleeping at the train station when the man attacked her. As she later told emergency responders, this was not the first time she had been abused by the man. As the Valais medium ‘Pomona’ first wrote, the man attacked the woman last week. The 60-year-old was taken to the emergency room in shock and the man is in prison in Verbania.
Chemical castration for rapists?
More and more rapes are making negative headlines in Italy. Gang rapes are particularly unusual, with the perpetrators and victims becoming increasingly younger. Now Italian politicians are calling for chemical castration of perpetrators. After the case that took place in Sicily at the end of January 2024, in which a young couple (17 and 13) were held by seven Egyptians and the 13-year-old was raped in front of her partner, more and more voices are calling for harsher punishments.
