Tadej Pogacar starts well, but without a win in the Tour of Catalonia.

Australian Nick Schultz was successful with his attack one kilometer from the finish in the first stage in Sant Feliu de Guixols. The 29-year-old from Brisbane managed to reach the finish in the uphill sprint, a few meters ahead of Pogacar. Schultz’s British teammate Stephen Williams finished third.

Pogacar is riding his first stage race in Catalonia since the Tour de France last July, in which he finished second behind Jonas Vingegaard. The tour, which ends in Barcelona on Sunday after seven stages, serves as preparation for the Slovenian at the Giro d’Italia, which starts on May 4.

One of the three mountain finishes is scheduled for Tuesday in Vallter 2000. There are no Swiss at the start of the 103rd Tour of Catalonia. (SDA)
