The people must decide on the 543 seats in the House of Representatives. It is very likely that Prime Minister Narendra Modi of the Hindu nationalist ruling party BJP will start a third five-year term after the elections. The opposition in the world’s most populous country is considered weak.

Modi has been Prime Minister since 2014. Under him, the democracy of 1.4 billion people increasingly became a country only for the Hindu majority. Significantly, the launch of his unofficial campaign took place at a Hindu pilgrimage site, where Modi inaugurated a new temple – on a site where a mosque had previously stood for centuries.
