The previous Economy Minister, Vaughan Gething, will become the new head of government of Wales. Members of the ruling Labor Party in the British part of the country and its affiliated unions elected the 50-year-old as party leader, the Social Democrats announced on Saturday. It is certain that Gething will be appointed ‘prime minister’ and successor to Mark Drakeford, who surprisingly announced his resignation after five years, in the regional parliament in Cardiff on Wednesday.
Gething narrowly prevailed over Education Minister Jeremy Miles (52). The son of a Welsh man and a Zambian woman will become the first black head of government in a European country, he said after his election. British Labor Leader Keir Starmer congratulated and spoke of a historic moment “that reflects the progress and values of contemporary Wales.”
Labor has been the head of government in Wales, which has a population of more than 3.1 million, for more than 100 years. With its liberal policies, the party often stands in contrast to the conservative central government in London. The regional government has extensive powers, for example in the field of environmental and education policy and partly in the field of taxation. (saw/sda/dpa)
