No, these photos are not some strange cult ritual from a crazy sect or even snapshots from carnival. The photo shows the director of the Richmond Wildlife Center in North Carolina (USA). With the help of the fox mask, Melissa Stanley wants to ensure the species-appropriate survival of a fox cub.
A hiker’s dog discovered the 24-hour-old baby fox in a forest near Richmond. The little one still had part of the umbilical cord hanging from it and there was no sign of his mother.
“Don’t get used to human sounds”
The man thought it was a bush and took it to the Wildlife Center emergency room. There the fox was given a cage with an electric blanket and a plush fox to cuddle with. The fact that Stanley wears the fox mask when feeding with a pipette is “to ensure that the orphan fox does not fixate on people and can therefore be released back into the wild later.”
According to Stanley, the baby fox needs to be fed every two to four hours: “We always wear gloves so he doesn’t get our scent in his nose and we stay very quiet. He also doesn’t need to get used to human noises.” Once the fox can eat on his own, he will be transferred to the Animal Education and Rescue Organization’s breeding station before being released into the wild. The Richmond Wildlife Center is currently asking for donations to support the to recoup extra costs for the young surprise guest. Participation on the internet is high.
