Vitaly Robertus, vice president of Russian oil giant Lukoil, has died. “It is with deep regret that we announce his sudden death at the age of 54,” the company said in a statement. It is still unclear why the man, who had been employed by the company for thirty years, died.
The company regrets his death, saying: “He will remain in our memories a talented leader, a versatile individual and a compassionate comrade.”
The death of the 54-year-old is not an isolated incident. Robertus is the fourth top manager of the oil company to die unexpectedly in the past two years.
Four dead top managers since the war in Ukraine
In October last year, CEO Vladimir Nekrasov died at the age of 66 – according to the company from ‘acute heart failure’.
His predecessor, Ravil Maganov (†67), also died after mysteriously falling from a hospital window in Moscow. His death sparked a wave of speculation that business leaders could be killed for public statements against the war in Ukraine. Lukoil made no mention of the fall from the window in his death announcement – and spoke of a “serious illness”.
Top manager Alexander Subbotin also died shortly after the outbreak of war in May 2022 at the age of 43. The oil company stated at the time that he had “consumed toad poison while visiting a shaman.” (Madam)
