Leonid Volkov after the attack: An unknown person attacked him with tear gas and a hammer.

Leonid Volkov, a close confidant of Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny who died in Russian custody, was violently attacked while in exile in Lithuania, independent Russian online media and a spokeswoman said.

“Leonid Volkov was just attacked in front of his house,” Kira Jarmisch, who was Navalny’s spokeswoman until Navalny’s death, said on Tuesday evening. Volkov was attacked with tear gas and a hammer, among other things.

“Tear gas sprayed in his eyes”

“Someone broke a car window and sprayed tear gas in his eyes. “The attacker then started attacking Leonid with a hammer,” Jarmisch said, describing the attack.

The spokeswoman did not provide information about where Volkov lives. But independent Russian online media Mediazona reported that the opposition is in Lithuania. Navalny supporters distributed photos of Volkov on the Internet showing him with various injuries.

According to journalist Sergey Parkhomenko, Volkov lives in a small village, he writes on Telegram. This means that it is not a random street hooligan or robber. This is a person who went there specifically to attack Volkov.”

The circumstances of Navalny’s death remain unclear

Volkov was one of Navalny’s closest confidantes, who Russian authorities say died on February 16 in a Russian prison camp in the Arctic, where he was serving a 19-year prison sentence.

According to Russian information, the 47-year-old died of “natural causes”, although the exact circumstances remain unclear. Navalny’s supporters and numerous Western politicians blame Russian leaders and President Vladimir Putin for the opposition figure’s death. (SDA)
