A 44-year-old man was shot dead near the Checkpoint Charlie tourist attraction in central Berlin on Sunday evening.
The man was walking along Zimmerstrasse near Friedrichstrasse around 8 p.m. “when suddenly shots were fired,” police and prosecutors announced in the German capital on Monday. “The 44-year-old was hit several times and collapsed on the sidewalk.”
Witnesses immediately alerted ambulance personnel and police. The man was taken to a hospital by ambulance, resuscitation attempts failed and the man died.
A homicide squad from the police began investigating and looking for clues that evening. The area around the former GDR border crossing Checkpoint Charlie, on the border between Berlin-Mitte and Kreuzberg, was extensively cordoned off.
The police investigation was still ongoing Monday morning. Police officers interviewed residents and employees of the surrounding shops in the cordoned off area.
According to a report by the “BZ”, on the evening of the crime, the police investigated several people at the scene to determine whether they were possibly involved in the crime. It therefore concerned possible remains of the discharge of a firearm. (sda/dpa)
