The Swiss hotel sector started the new year with another record: more than half of the data stolen from the federal government was sensitive

After the record year of 2023, the Swiss hotel industry got off to a strong start in the new year. Mainly due to more foreign guests, local hotels were even better occupied than in the same month last year.

The total number of overnight stays increased by 2.2 percent to 3.1 million in January compared to the same month last year, the Federal Statistical Office (BFS) announced on Thursday. There were more overnight stays than ever before in January.

More international guests

The driving force behind the increase were mainly guests from abroad. In January they accounted for 1.4 million overnight stays, an increase of 4.0 percent. The most important guest group came from approximately 105,000 overnight stays Germanyfollowed by the USA (65,000 overnight stays), France (54,000) and so on United Kingdom (51,000).

For Swiss guests, however, the figure was only slightly higher: +0.6 percent. With 1.7 million overnight stays, they still made up the majority of all guests in January.

Overall, the Swiss hotel sector has seamlessly continued last year’s guest record. With 41.8 million overnight stays, in 2023 it exceeded 40 million overnight stays in one year for the first time. (rbu/sda/awp)
