Brazilian Dani Alves was sentenced to four and a half years in prison for rape in Spain. A court in Barcelona has found the defendant guilty of forcing a young woman to have sex in a disco in the Catalan metropolis on December 31, 2022. In addition, the 126-time international must pay the victim 150,000 euros in damages.
The former FC Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain player was arrested a year ago. During the trial he denied the allegations in court. He initially denied any sexual contact with the 23-year-old woman to “save his marriage.” Alves later claimed that the sexual acts had taken place with the young woman’s consent.
The public prosecutor had demanded nine years in prison. According to the court, the fact that Alves had promised to pay the victim the required compensation regardless of the outcome of the trial was seen as a mitigation of the sentence. His lawyer Ines Guardiola nevertheless announced that she would appeal and fight to the end. (abu/sda/dpa)
