At first glance, the new BMW CE 02 is reminiscent of City Cocos or Ridelecs, which are especially popular among young people. Mobility editor Raoul Schwinnen (pictured) had the opportunity to test the two-wheeler around Valencia (Spain).

At first glance, BMW’s electric BMW CE 02 reminds us of the City Cocos or Ridelecs, which are especially popular among young people. They can (still) be ridden without a helmet, license plate and ID.

However, the BMW CE 02 goes much faster than the City-Coco and therefore must be driven with a proper number plate in Switzerland. In addition to the helmet, you also need a valid category B (car) or A1 (motorcycle up to 125 cc or 11 kW) license to drive, depending on the performance variant. It’s very clear so far.

But it’s less clear where the new electric BMW CE 02 will fit in. We can say this: In principle, it is a mixture of a motorcycle and a city cruiser. BMW is more creative in its definition of the term and calls its new two-wheeler the “eParkourer”. When we asked about the meaning of this strange word creation, the responsible product manager gave us the following answer: “The eParkourer is a great thing between a fashionable motorcycle, an electric scooter and a traveling companion for the city, and is especially aimed at ensuring that beginners can do it electric on two wheels almost silently.” They are transitioning to mobility. » Aha!

Two models of 4 and 11 kW

Two drive variants are available for the CE 02. The base features an electric drive with a manageable 4 HP (3.2 kW) and 55 Nm and travels at a maximum speed of 45 km/h. Advantage: This means that the electric two-wheeler can be driven with a normal B license even without a motorcycle test. However, for the more powerful CE 02, which has a maximum power of 15 HP (11 kW) and a continuous output of 8 HP (6 kW), can reach a speed of 95 km/h and accelerate from 0 to 50 km/h in three seconds, the A1 in Switzerland permit required (töff up to 125 cc or 11 kW). The low seat height of 75 centimeters and the vehicle weight of 119 or 132 kilograms are intended to make the city cruiser particularly attractive to young people and smaller, slimmer people.

The thick, almost free-standing wheels make the CE 02 look as trendy as a coffee racer on our short drive. True motorcycle enthusiasts, on the other hand, often turn up their noses when they see and ride the BMW CE 02, and many refuse to give us the usual Töffler greeting during the ride. For experts: The front wheel of the CE 02 features a hydraulically damped telescopic fork, while the rear uses a single-sided swingarm with direct-link shock absorber. The front 3.5×14 inch cast aluminum wheels in 2.50×14 format and disc design attract attention with confidence with their wide tires (front 120/80/14, rear 150/70/14). Disc brakes are mounted front and rear along with ABS at the front.

The more powerful top model has a range of 90 kilometers, while the weaker version has a range of around 45 kilometers before needing to be plugged in again. We can read necessary information such as speed and charging status from the TFT screen. The smartphone can also be paired and used as a navigation system. The BMW CE 02 can be charged via a regular household socket with only 0.9 kW. Things go a little faster with the 1.5 kWh fast charger available as an accessory on the Highline version and the more powerful 11 kWh version. A normal charge of the basic 4 kW version takes three hours to recharge the battery. In the more powerful version, it takes about 100 minutes to go from 20 to 80 percent and three and a half hours to 100 percent with a 1.5 kW charger.

With a variety of side and rear bags ranging in volume from 16 to 60 litres, the BMW CE 02 is not only equipped as a carrier, but can also be individually customized. But so much urban and modern mobility comes with a price. Even the weaker 4 kW version of the CE 02 costs an impressive 7,700 francs; The more powerful 11 kW version is offered for sale at 8,700 francs. By the way: If you want to take a closer look at the new BMW Citymobile on two wheels, you can do so next week in Bern at Motofestival, Switzerland’s largest two-wheeled trade fair, from 29 February to 3 March (see box) . The first CE 02 is expected to be in dealerships in the summer.
