Defected Russian military helicopter pilot Maxim Kuzminov (†29), who was apparently shot in Spain, may have revealed his whereabouts to the killers by calling his ex-girlfriend and inviting him to visit him in Alicante.
A man with Ukrainian documents was found riddled with bullets in an underground car park in Villajoyosa, near Alicante, earlier this month. The identity of the dead man has not yet been officially confirmed. But a Ukrainian government spokesman confirmed Kuzminov’s death. Spanish media also report that the supposedly 33-year-old Ukrainian is actually Kuzminov. Investigators are currently awaiting the results of fingerprint and DNA tests.
The killers are said to have used Russian ammunition
According to reports, Kuzminov was found dead after inviting his ex-girlfriend to his new address in Spain. He had apparently settled there under an assumed name. It is suspected that the call could have been intercepted by Russian secret services.
Spanish investigators assume that the attackers were hitmen who have probably since left the country. Meanwhile, sources close to the investigation claim that Russian ammunition was used in the attack. This was reported by the newspaper ‘Informacion’. It is said that the Kremlin wanted to signal the reach of its security apparatus.
Kuzminov defected to Ukraine in a Russian Mi-8 transport helicopter at the end of August 2023. The 29-year-old was declared an enemy of the state in Russia. In October 2023, journalist Sergei Zinin reported on the Rossiya 1 television channel that Russian special services had received orders to kill Kuzminov. (no)
