Foreign Minister Israel Katz wrote on X, formerly Twitter, on Monday that he had summoned the Brazilian ambassador to Yad Vashem. The Holocaust Memorial near Jerusalem is “the place that, more than any other place, testifies to what the Nazis and Hitler did to the Jews, including my own family.”

Brazil’s president on Sunday compared Israel’s military operation in the Gaza Strip to the mass murder of European Jews on the orders of Adolf Hitler. “What is happening to the Palestinian people in Gaza has never happened at any other time in history. “Actually, it has already happened: when Hitler decided to kill the Jews,” Lula said during a press conference in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa.

Lula will remain persona non grata in Israel until he apologizes and retracts his statements, Katz wrote. “The comparison (…) between Israel’s just war against Hamas and the actions of Hitler and the Nazis, who murdered six million Jews, is an extremely serious anti-Semitic attack that desecrates the memory of those who died in the Holocaust.”

The Gaza war was sparked by a massacre by Hamas and other extremists on October 7, 2023 in the Israeli border area.
