The Via Secura program has been running in Switzerland for over a decade and aims to make our roads safer. Its measures are primarily aimed at speeders. Depending on the type of crime, penalties can range from impounding the speeding vehicle to imprisonment for up to four years.

From March 1, Austria will also take action: Then the highest level of a new package of measures against speeding violations will come into force – and for foreign drivers as well! Anyone caught driving at 60 km/h in the city or 70 km/h outside the city must surrender their driver’s license immediately. The vehicle will also be seized.

Fast cars are sold at auction

Within two weeks, the relevant regional administration will decide whether to return the vehicle or, as Austrian officials say, “win it”, that is, permanently confiscate it and then put it up for auction. If the vehicle is a loan or rental vehicle, it will not be auctioned, but an unlimited driving ban will be recorded on the vehicle documents for the speeding person.

The decision depends on the severity of the violation: If the speed limit is below 79 km/h in urban areas or 89 km/h outside urban areas, it is only necessary to surrender their vehicle permanently for repeated violations. Anyone driving 80 km/h in the city or 90 km/h outside the city will definitely lose their car. An additional fine always has to be paid. 70 percent of the proceeds from the vehicle auction will go to the Austrian Road Safety Fund, and the rest will go to the municipality in the area where the speeder was caught.

can be appreciated

Depending on the type of road, the maximum speed in Austria is 130 km/h (motorway), 100 km/h (rural road) or 50 km/h (urban). In many towns, lower limits also generally apply in the local area; In this case, a speed of 50 km/h is allowed only on main roads. Important: Some motorways have a designated environmental speed limit of 100 km/h instead of the permitted 130 km/h. The only exception is fully electric cars, which are allowed to reach speeds of up to 130 km/h in such zones.

It’s also good to know: in Austria, police officers are allowed to predict speeding violations and then issue fines. For this, the speeding person must be observed from a distance of at least 100 meters. Furthermore, an estimate is only permitted up to a speed exceeding 30 km/h, i.e. an extreme range below the new valid measures.

Different cuts

Also: In Austria, as in our country, a measurement tolerance is deducted from the measured speed value before the buses are measured. However, this tolerance varies depending on the measurement method for our neighbors. In radar measurements, five percent of the measured value is deducted. The charge of laser devices is 3 km/h in urban areas, and three percent less outside urban areas and on highways.

If the measurements are made via video, the police impose a 10 km/h cut in urban areas, otherwise a ten percent cut. If the police vehicle follows the speeding woman and is measured with a speedometer, a 15 percent deduction is made. A tolerance of three percent applies for a cross-section measurement. The time it takes for a car to travel a known route is measured and from this the speed of the car is calculated.

Significantly higher penalties for speeding have been imposed in Austria since 2021. At that time the amounts were doubled to a maximum of 5,000 euros.
