After criticism of invitations to AfD politicians for the opening of the Berlinale, the festival management has again not invited the party representatives. Especially in light of the revelations of anti-democratic positions in recent weeks, it is important to take an unequivocal stand for an open democracy, the Berlinale leadership announced on Thursday.
“Today we have therefore withdrawn in writing all previously invited AfD politicians and informed them that they are not welcome at the Berlinale,” management duo Mariette Rissenbeek and Carlo Chatrian said in a statement.
The AfD and many of its members hold positions that deeply contradict the fundamental values of democracy. At a time when right-wing extremists are entering parliament, the Berlinale now wants to take a clear position. The invitations caused a lot of criticism. Several people had called for the invitations to the AfD to be withdrawn.
