Footage from the night shows the warship Ivanovets being sunk in the Black Sea. Compared to the drones, the 56 meter long ship is a giant. Yet it only took six Navy drones to destroy the ship. Because they’ve got it all: The video shows the explosions shaking the ship’s hull.
The information could not be independently verified. But pro-Russian military bloggers have also responded to the incident. For Russian President Vladimir Putin (71), it is once again a shame for his navy.
“That makes it difficult to control them.”
As a drone pilot reveals in an interview with CNN, it was Magura drones that caused the ship to capsize. The drones are only a few meters long and sit on jet skis that zoom over the water. The Magura visually resembles a small speedboat. The name stands for ‘Maritime Autonomous Guard Unmanned Robotic Apparatus’.
The drone is about six meters long, but only protrudes about 50 centimeters from the water. “This size makes it difficult to control them because the sea is choppy. But it also makes it much more difficult for the enemy to hit us,” says the drone pilot. The super drone weighs 250 to 300 kilograms. The production of one copy would cost approximately 234,000 francs.
“The most important thing is that you feel the drone”
The long range of 833 kilometers made it possible for the attackers to launch the attack from Crimea. It attacks its target at a speed of 75 kilometers per hour. “The most important thing is that you feel the drone,” the drone pilot says about the attack. And: “If you push it a little, you can lose control of the drone. I would describe it as a kind of jewelry work.” According to the soldier, the difference in size between attacker and target is also an advantage: “No warship can be as maneuverable as these drones.”
The drones were controlled from the mainland via a Starlink satellite and continuously monitored by the drone pilot. One wrong move and the mission would have failed. Because: If the drone is close to the target, the pilot must control it himself.
The drones have proven their effectiveness even against some of the heaviest ships in Moscow’s Black Sea Fleet. In late December, the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) reported on a sunken Tarantul-type patrol boat used to combat submarines.
