Tennis professionals are the epitome of individual athletes. Besides the team around them, they are solely responsible for their success – or failure – because ultimately only they are on the field. You would also think that they are completely shielded in their match preparation. Wrong thought!

Nick Kyrgios (28) reveals in his new podcast ‘Good Trouble’ that the players meet in the locker room before the match: ‘Everyone thinks tennis is individual. But everyone showers together and eats together.” Star chef Gordon Ramsay (57), a guest in the latest episode of the podcast, can’t believe there are no separate cabins.

Kyrgios showered next to Medvedev

Normally you only want to see your competitor on the court and not in the preparation phase, says Kyrgios: “Tennis is great in that respect.” The Australian, who could only play one match last year due to a persistent wrist injury, also gives an example.

At the 2022 US Open, before his round of 16 against Russian Daniil Medvedev (turns 28 on Sunday), he watched the match for them in the same room. “We got ready in the same cabin.” Then they went out, Kyrgios won in four sets against the current number 3 in the world.

It was very strange, says Kyrgios, who has now fallen out of the ATP rankings. “We play to an audience of millions for hundreds of thousands of dollars and then we shower next to each other.” The atmosphere was quite strange, especially since they were the only people in the locker room. “So you really see your opponent all day long.”
