Due to a conflict over the sale of entrance tickets, residents are blocking access to the destroyed city of Machu Picchu in Peru.
Among other things, they closed the railway line to the archaeological site in the Andes. The demonstrators are protesting against the contract with a private company for ticket sales. On Wednesday evening (local time), the Ministry of Culture announced that the contract would expire and called on residents to end their strike.
Last weekend, more than a thousand tourists were stranded in Machu Picchu because of the protest. The president of the local chamber of commerce said in the newspaper “El Comercio” that the region lost about three million soles (about 679,000 francs) in revenue per day as a result of the protests.
The ruins of Machu Picchu are one of the top tourist attractions in South America and have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983. The city was built by the Incas in the 15th century and consists of about 200 buildings. (sda/dpa)
