In the case of the slain Dutch crime reporter Peter R. de Vries, the Public Prosecution Service has demanded life imprisonment for the three main suspects. Her guilt in the 2021 murder has been proven beyond a reasonable doubt, prosecutors said in court in Amsterdam on Wednesday.
The prosecutor sought prison sentences of three to 21 years for the remaining six defendants for murder or complicity in the murder of the prominent reporter.
The Public Prosecution Service had already demanded the maximum sentence in 2022 against the alleged shooter Delano G. (24) and the driver of the getaway car, Kamil E. (37). The process then had to be repeated for procedural reasons.
The third main suspect, Krystian M. (28), is seen as a ‘murder broker’. According to the Public Prosecution Service, he organized the crime. Only M. admitted complicity and apologized to the victim’s relatives. All other suspects refused to testify. A man had protested his innocence.
With the murder of Peter R. de Vries, the suspects have caused great damage and caused an “incredible shock in society”, according to the public prosecutor in the heavily guarded high-security court in Amsterdam.
The murder is said to be the work of the drug gang of the infamous criminal Ridouan Taghi. De Vries was a confidante of a key witness who testified in the extensive criminal trial against Taghi and his accomplices. The brother and lawyer of the key witness had been murdered earlier. But so far there is no evidence against the Taghi gang for the reporter’s murder.
The prominent TV reporter was shot in the summer of 2021 at the age of 64 in the middle of Amsterdam. He later died from his serious injuries. The act shocked the country. Immediately afterwards, two main suspects were arrested.
Two men are now also accused of filming the crime and distributing the footage on the internet. According to the Public Prosecution Service, this was intended to increase the shock in society. The verdict is expected in June. (sda/dpa)
