Several hundred farmers also demonstrated in Italy on Wednesday against European agricultural policy and in favor of receiving state subsidies. In several regions of the country they blocked road traffic with tractors.
In some places roads were completely closed. The affected regions included Tuscany, Lombardy and Calabria. There were also protests on the Mediterranean island of Sardinia.
Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini of the right-wing ruling party Lega blamed the EU Commission in Brussels for the protests. “The tractors that drive on the roads throughout Europe are having problems with the current European Commission,” said the Minister of Transport, according to a report by the Ansa news agency. He described the Commission’s agricultural policy under German President Ursula von der Leyen as “catastrophic”. (sda/awp/dpa)
