Kara-Mursa’s lawyer received news that the 42-year-old spent four months in a solitary cell in the new prison in the Siberian region of Omsk, independent media Novaya Gazeta reported on Tuesday.
Kara-Mursa was sentenced to 25 years in prison last April on charges of treason, but is internationally considered a political prisoner. On Monday, his relatives announced that Kara-Mursa had disappeared from his previous prison camp and that his new whereabouts were unknown. There was great concern at the time about the opposition politician and war opponent, who was in serious health problems after several poison attacks.
Time and again, opponents of the regime who are imprisoned in the Russian prison system literally disappear for periods of time and lose contact with family, friends and even lawyers. Human rights activists criticize this practice as intimidation by the Russian penal system.
