It is undoubtedly a new level of escalation in the Middle East. On Sunday evening, a small US base in Jordan, near the Syrian border, was attacked by a drone. Three American soldiers were killed and twenty others were injured. Now the Pentagon has released the names of the victims.
William Jerome Rivers (†46), Breonna Alexsondria Moffett (†23) and Kennedy Ladon Sanders (†24) were killed in the attack. All three soldiers killed were reservists from the 926th Engineer Brigade, based in the US state of Georgia.
Sanders’ father Shawn told American media on Monday: “She spoke to her mother the day before. It wasn’t like they were on high alert or in a safe bunker.”
Families can hardly bear losses
It is believed that the attack on the soldiers’ accommodation was carried out by an Iranian-backed militia. This is mainly located in Iraq. The US military rated the drone as ‘non-hostile’, which turned out to be a fatal misjudgment. At the time of the attack, the base’s anti-aircraft system was disabled. Shawn Sanders suspected his daughter was dead when uniformed military officers arrived at her home. “I knew immediately.”
On the phone, Sanders told her mother that she wanted to take the next step in her military career. The young woman also planned to buy a motorcycle after her return. In addition to her work, she was also involved in the military as a football and basketball coach. “She was popular everywhere and had no enemies. Kennedy smiled the entire time.” For the father, the loss is almost unbearable. “She just lived her life, enjoyed it to the fullest and worked towards a career.”
“All her dreams were shattered in an instant.”
Her parents describe her as an ambitious person who wanted to achieve many dreams and goals. “All these different things that she had plans for were destroyed in an instant,” said Kennedy’s mother, Oneida Sanders.
Private William Rivers joined the U.S. Army in 2011. In 2018, he completed a nine-month deployment to Iraq. Moffett decided to join the military in 2019.
