An earthquake with a magnitude of 3.8 caused minor damage in the Austrian state of Tyrol on Tuesday. The epicenter was near the Pillersee near St. Johann.
According to state agency GeoSphere Austria, it was the strongest quake yet in a series of small earthquakes that have shaken this area near the border with the southern German state of Bavaria since early January.
Dozens of reports were received on Tuesday morning about hairline cracks in walls and isolated damage to the plasterwork of buildings, seismologist Christiane Freudenthaler from GeoSphere Austria told the DPA news agency. In the current series of earthquakes, 55 shocks have been located so far. Only part of it was noticeable to the population, the expert said.
A series of earthquakes is not uncommon in Tyrol. Whether more earthquakes will occur cannot be predicted, Freudenthaler said. (sda/dpa)
