Two thieves in Germany thought they had come up with a very clever plan. But the two men did the math without Tesla.
The suspects stole a senior bag from her car in a parking lot in front of the Rewe supermarket in Bitburg. As the woman loaded her purchases into the car, one of the thieves dropped coins on the ground as he passed by to get the would-be victim’s attention. Successfully.
The man, who spoke broken German, started talking to the woman while his accomplice grabbed the woman’s handbag. The lady had put it in the trunk beforehand. The two thieves then fled in their black car: a Toyota Yaris or a Hyundai i10. The incident happened on November 8.
“This is a real help for us”
But now the police are publishing mugshots of the alleged perpetrators. What is special about the recordings is their origin. They come from a Tesla camera in the parking lot next door. The car has a monitoring mode. The 360 degree camera records the entire environment – mainly for the autopilot.
Thieves should also be deterred. Or possibly convicted. The Bitburg District Court has now approved the use of the Tesla photos as mugshots. “It is the first time that we have obtained images of suspects in this way. But this will probably happen more often in the future and is a real help for us,” a researcher told “Bild”. (man)
