Prominent US Senator Lindsey Graham is to testify in court in the investigation into possible interference in the 2020 presidential election in the state of Georgia. The South Carolina Republican failed an appeals court in Georgia in an attempt to avoid such testimony. The court on Thursday (local time) rejected objections from his lawyers that Graham, as a senator, was protected from such investigations.
Graham was a close confidant of the then US president during Donald Trump’s tenure. In particular, his survey is likely to cover phone calls Graham allegedly had with Georgia’s chief election monitor, Brad Raffensperger, and his employees in the weeks following Trump’s election defeat in 2020. Georgia was one of the states where the election was in favor. by Trump Democratic challenger Joe Biden.
Attorney Fani Willis in Fulton County, Georgia, launched an investigation into the 2020 election last year – into attempts by Trump and his supporters to influence the lawful conduct of the state’s election in order to reverse the outcome there. Several Trump allies, including Graham, have been asked to testify before a jury now set up. Willis did not rule out the possibility of suing Trump as well.
To this day, the ex-president claims without any evidence that he was deprived of a second term due to fraud. For weeks, he tried to use dubious methods to then undo Biden’s election victory. His camp also failed with dozens of lawsuits against election results in several states. (aeg/sda/dpa)
