The man was in intensive care after surgery.

The fall from ten to twelve meters, caused by a falling tree, injured a total of six people, four of them seriously.

The other injured were the son (20), daughter (19) and brother (46) of the 49-year-old Dane. In addition, two German couples aged 58 and 62, who were in the neighboring gondola, were injured. According to the police, they were injured by the severe vibrations of the suspension cable.

The gondola crashed in an impassable, wooded area, making rescue of the seriously injured very difficult. They were eventually rescued from the helicopter with a rope and flown to hospital.

The investigation into the cause of the accident began on Tuesday and the cable car authority has already started its work. It was unclear why the tree fell and landed on the support cable; there was no wind on Tuesday. According to previous information, the tree fell on the anchorage of the gondola and the supporting cable itself did not break. Imst district police commander Hubert Juen told the APA that it was not believed there was a “technical or human failure”. The affected Acherkogelbahn was taken out of use. (saw/sda/apa)
