Citizens of Kosovo can “now travel to Spain” because the country has recognized “normal passports of the Republic of Kosovo” since January 1, Kosovo Foreign Minister Donika Gervalla-Schwarz announced on Saturday in the online service Greece, Romania, Slovakia and Cyprus do not gain independence.
Kosovo Foreign Minister Gervalla-Schwarz added that the recognition of the passports “does not in any way represent an official recognition of Kosovo as an independent state” by the government in Madrid.
Step towards accession to the EU
Spain’s decision to recognize Kosovan passports follows extensive visa liberalization for the Western Balkan state: since January 1, Kosovan citizens have been allowed to enter the Schengen area for up to 90 days without a visa.
Visa liberalization is seen in Kosovo as a further step in the international recognition of the state – and towards possible accession to the EU. (sda/afp)
