There were 84 dead and 284 injured, National Rescue Service chief Jafar Miadfar said on Thursday, according to state news agency Irna. State media initially estimated the death toll at 103 on Wednesday, but Health Minister Bahram Eynollahi corrected this to 95 in the evening.

Rescue Service Chief Miadfar explained the confusion over the number of victims with the devastating condition in which some bodies were found after the explosions.

On the fourth anniversary of the death of powerful Iranian general Ghassem Soleimani, two massive explosions occurred Wednesday in his hometown of Kerman, near the grave. The Iranian government called it a terrorist attack.

The EU condemned the attack as an act of terror. It was the deadliest attack in the Islamic Republic’s 45-year history. The background to the crime is still unclear. (SDA)
