This year, 49 people died in drug-related settlements in Marseille, significantly more than in previous years. There were also 118 injured, including 18 minors. This was reported by the newspaper “La Provence” with reference to the public prosecutor’s office.

Drug trafficking and gang settlements have been causing problems in France’s second-largest city for years. In 2022 there were 32 deaths and 33 injuries, in 2021 25 people died and 21 were injured.

The youngest fatal victim is a 22-year-old man who died in a shooting in the drug district of Marseille on Friday evening. As “La Provence” reported on Saturday, the man was shot with a Kalashnikov on Friday evening as he got into his car in the parking lot of a fast food restaurant.

The man, who was already known to the police for drug trafficking, was resuscitated at the scene, but later died in hospital. On the night of Boxing Day, a man who had already been convicted of drug trafficking was shot in the same street. (sda/dpa)
