On Telegram, the Russian Ministry of Defense made a rare admission: that the air defenses in Saturday’s Ukrainian attack on the Russian border region of Belgorod also caused casualties among its own population.

At least 21 people, including children, were killed in retaliation in Kiev for massive Russian bombings the day before. There were more than 100 injured. But not all victims were killed by Ukrainian missiles, as Russia itself confirmed late on Saturday.

Bombed own population

Alleged Ukrainian Vilkha rockets carrying cluster munitions and Czech vampire rockets were intercepted by Russian air defenses, the statement said. “Several rockets and debris from the fired rockets hit the city of Belgorod,” the report said.

Then there is another attempted explanation to justify the missteps of our own air defense: “If rockets containing cluster munitions hit the city directly, the consequences would have been immeasurably more serious.” The statement leaves open how many of the victims died from their own weapons.

The official Telegram statement from the Moscow Ministry of Defense ends with a threat to Ukraine: “This crime will not go unpunished.”

Retaliation follows retaliation

The Ukrainian actions came after Russian forces apparently fired more rockets into Kharkiv from positions in Belgorod. The eastern Ukrainian city is located about 70 kilometers from the Russian one.
