North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has called on the military and defense industry to step up preparations in the event of a war on the Korean Peninsula. At the year-end meeting of the central committee of the largely isolated country’s Workers’ Party, he again accused the United States of working with allies toward a confrontation with North Korea. The military situation has reached an extreme point, Kim was quoted by state media on Thursday. “He outlined military tasks for the people’s army, the munitions industry, the nuclear weapons industry and the civilian defense sector to accelerate preparations for war,” the report said.

The multi-day party meeting in Pyongyang, which started on Tuesday, also discussed the self-proclaimed nuclear power’s security policy goals for the coming year. Kim had already ordered that preparations for war should continue aggressively at a meeting of the party’s central military commission in August. The decisions at the time were also seen as a response to South Korea’s increased military cooperation with the US. Both countries consider North Korea, which is subject to international sanctions because of its nuclear weapons program, as their main enemies.

Tensions have increased significantly again recently. After an unprecedented series of missile tests last year, North Korea again tested nuclear-capable missiles this year, including intercontinental ballistic missiles. The US and South Korea agreed in April to intensify their military cooperation, including expanding their joint military exercises. (sda/dpa)
