It is a Christmas story of a slightly different nature: the protagonists are not a pregnant Mary and her Joseph and the setting is not Bethlehem either. Instead, this story is set in the northern Indian village of Athkona and concerns a female tiger. But there are still some parallels:
On Christmas Day, the tiger also made a difficult and long journey (about 20 kilometers). He migrated from Pilibhit Tiger Reserve to Athkona. He was discovered there in the early morning hours by a resident in his backyard. The news of this ‘Christmas miracle’ quickly spread through the village.
Admittedly, there are not that many parallels. There was no special star in the sky, no angels, probably not too many shepherds and certainly no kings handing out presents. But the more spectators with smartphones.
Videos of the same spectators are now making waves on social media. Some stood just a few feet away from the adult tiger, who seemed uninterested in all the commotion. To be on the safe side, authorities quickly installed a mesh security fence around the backyard where the tiger had taken up residence.
About ten hours after the female tiger was discovered, the story ended happily when a team from the reserve from which it had “escaped” was able to capture it and return it safely, several Indian media reports. (lso)
