North Korean leader Kim Jong Un (39) has threatened a nuclear attack if his country is “provoked with nuclear weapons”. Kim has ordered the military missile agency “not to hesitate” to carry out a nuclear attack “if the enemy provokes with nuclear weapons,” state news agency KCNA reported Thursday.
The warning followed a meeting between South Korea and the United States in Washington to discuss nuclear deterrence in a possible conflict with North Korea. The agenda included the topic of “nuclear and strategic planning”. The United States and South Korea recently warned that a nuclear attack by North Korea would result in the end of Pyongyang’s leadership.
Washington, Seoul and Tokyo responded to Kim’s latest comments with a joint statement calling on North Korea to “cease further provocations and accept our call to engage in serious dialogue without preconditions.” On Monday, North Korea tested its most powerful intercontinental ballistic missile yet, with a possible range as far as the US east coast.
