Amelia doesn’t want any birthday presents. The girl from Chesterfield, Virginia, prefers to make others happy: she is collecting donations to fulfill the wish list of the Children’s Hospital in Richmond.

The four-year-old’s family, along with relatives and friends, helped receive the gifts. “She was very stubborn,” her mother Caroline Browell told the American broadcaster CNN.

“I just want to help”

“It was truly heartwarming and wonderful to see so many people helping us with this cause that was so close to our hearts,” Browell said. Books, games and puzzles quickly pile up in the family living room.

“I just want to help the babies and children,” says little Amelia, explaining her motivation. She even foregoes her own gifts.

But the four-year-old’s mother explains further: In the summer of 2021, Amelia’s big sister Addy was diagnosed with a so-called paraganglioma. “They are hormone-producing tumors that produce fight or flight hormones and release uncontrolled amounts of them into the body, making them very sick,” Browell says.

A devastating diagnosis. According to Addy’s mother, she only got better when doctors at the Richmond hospital removed the tumor, saving her life. “She is now a sophomore and enjoying life to the fullest,” Browell told CNN.

That’s exactly why it was so important for her younger sister Amelia to send her donations to this hospital. A matter of the heart. And actually, shortly before Thanksgiving, the four-year-old was able to give the kids their presents.

Amelia’s mother hopes her daughter’s story will inspire others as well. “We want all our children to understand the importance of being kind and helping others.” (gs)
