Slovakia denies more LGBTQI rights

According to the police, in the evening of October 12, a right-wing extremist shot two men in front of the bar and seriously injured a woman. Before his subsequent suicide, he sent hate messages on the internet. In the days that followed, thousands demonstrated against hatred against sexual minorities. The killer also planned to kill politicians.

Only 50 of the 133 MPs present on Wednesday voted in favor of a motion by the liberal Freedom and Solidarity Party (SaS). It provided for an official cohabitation with the designation «living together living together». It should grant unmarried cohabiting couples, regardless of their sexual orientation, a small share of the rights to which spouses are automatically entitled. For example, they must have common property and be able to inherit from each other.

Liberal media and representatives of the LGBTQI scene were disappointed on Thursday. The English abbreviation LGBTQI stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans people, queer and intersex people. After the assassination attempt, many politicians were concerned, but the gestures remained empty. “They are not even prepared to take such a small step towards equality,” said Martin Macko of the Inakost (Otherness) citizens’ initiative, which had organized protest rallies after the attack.
