De Jong immediately left SC Cambuur as a manager due to ill health

Henk de Jong has left with immediate effect as head coach of SC Cambuur, currently 14th in the Eredivisie, due to health reasons.

“This news may come as a surprise to many people, but it is a decision that naturally takes a long time to think about. In the end, health is the most important thing and what I think is perhaps even more important is my commitment to the club, staff, players and fans,” the 58-year-old coach said via the club’s channel.

Cambuur rose to the top flight twice under De Jong, finishing ninth in 2022, their highest-ever finish in the Eredivisie. Cambuur hopes to keep De Jong in another role for the club.

Take time to relax

Last year, De Jong was forced to suspend his duties when a cyst was discovered in his head.

“We did everything and tried, but you also have to be honest and that’s the best thing for everyone given the situation. As the head coach of a top flight club you don’t have time to fully recover and I am.” Really take the time to do this now. “After that we will see what the future brings.”

Cambuur plays FC Twente at home on Sunday. Assistants Pascal Bosspoelt and Martijn Barto bear ultimate responsibility until a successor to De Jong is found.
