There is a poster on the wall in the office of Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Galant (65). Hundreds of Hamas commanders can be seen there. The terrorists’ mugshots are arranged in a pyramid. At the top of the pyramid are portraits of three men, Reuters news agency reports. The trio is still on the run. Their names: Mohammed Deif, Marwan Issa and Jahia Sinwar. Who are the three masterminds of terror?

Mohammed Deif

Mohammed Deif (58) is the head of Hamas’s military wing, the Al-Qassam Brigades. He led the major Hamas attack on October 7, which the terrorists call the “Al-Aqsa Flood,” and is considered the driving force behind the use of suicide bombers, the tunnels and the Hamas rocket system in Gaza. He is also accused of involvement in numerous bloody attacks on Israelis. He has been at the top of the Israeli charts for years.

Israel has already tried to kill him seven times. All attacks failed. However, the Israeli attacks paralyzed Deif. He is said to be missing an eye, an arm and both legs. And: In August 2014, his wife and two of his children were killed in an airstrike.

Marwan Issa

Marwan Issa (58) is perhaps the least known head of the three men who make up Hamas’s secret military council. Deif’s deputy, known as the ‘shadow man’, has been involved in many important decisions in recent years. Should either of the other two leaders die or be captured, they will act as a replacement. Gerhard Conrad (69), former member of the German Federal Intelligence Service (BND), describes Issa in the Reuters report as a “meticulous and careful analyst”. According to Israel’s Meir Amit Intelligence and Terrorism Information Center, he survived an attack by the Israeli army in 2006. The US has had him on its terror list since 2019.

Jahia Sinwar

Jahia Sinwar (61) is Hamas’s political expert and its leader in the Gaza Strip. In 1994, he took part in the kidnapping and murder of the young Israeli soldier Nachshon Wachsmann and was sentenced by Israel to four life sentences. The radical ideologue was already looking forward to life in prison. But then he was released in a controversial prisoner swap of 1,027 Palestinians for Israeli soldier Gilad Schalit (37) in 2011. To this day, he makes no secret of his goal to destroy Israel.

The Israeli army (IDF) now wants to eliminate him. “He is a dead man,” Israeli army spokesman Daniel Hagari (47) said recently.

In the past, Sinwar has repeatedly appeared publicly at rallies. However, according to Hamas, he no longer uses electronic devices for fear that Israelis could enter such places. In Israeli retaliation after the raid, his house in the Gaza Strip was not bombed for the first time.
