According to the Swiss Nutrition Bulletin, 35 percent of Swiss skip the first meal of the day. But this can have negative consequences, as shown by a recent study from China reported by the “German Health Portal” (DGP).

Research confirms that breakfast may be the most important meal of the day. Regularly skipping meals after waking up is associated with an increased risk of stomach and colon cancer.

Observation period: more than five years

But that’s not all: Skipping breakfast is also linked to chronic inflammation. Making breakfast a habit can lead to the development and progression of malignant tumors in the digestive tract due to the close connection between inflammation and gastrointestinal cancer, scientists write.

And more: in recent years it has already been proven that skipping breakfast is associated with obesity, metabolic disorders, cardiovascular diseases and deterioration in mental functions.

369 cases of gastrointestinal cancer

62,746 people participated in the research. The average age was 51.3 years. 86 percent of the survey participants said they had breakfast every day. Only 5 percent of those surveyed had never had breakfast.

During the observation period of more than five years, 369 cases of gastrointestinal cancer were recorded. Participants who ate breakfast only once or twice had an increased risk of stomach and liver cancer.

If you don’t eat breakfast, your risk of cancer increases

The results were even more devastating for participants who didn’t eat breakfast at all. In addition to colon and liver cancer, the risk of esophageal and biliary tract cancer is also increased. The researchers note that this relationship was not influenced by demographics, body mass, socioeconomic or nutritional factors.

They believe that prevention efforts are helpful in educating the public about the link between skipping breakfast and gastrointestinal cancer. Further studies are needed to clarify the underlying mechanisms. A previous study conducted in Mexico showed that skipping breakfast increased the risk of death after cancer.

So: Even if you are stressed in the morning, if you care about your health, you should not skip breakfast.
