The trial for serious rape and sexual abuse against the German, who is also a suspect in the Maddie case, will begin in February. The trial against the 46-year-old will start on February 16, the Braunschweig regional court announced on Thursday. The Braunschweig Public Prosecutor’s Office charged the man in October 2022.

He is charged with three counts of aggravated rape and two counts of child sexual abuse. He is said to have committed the crimes between late December 2000 and June 2017 in Portugal, where the then three-year-old British girl Madeleine McCann disappeared from an apartment complex in May 2007. The man is suspected of murder in the Maddie case.

The investigation into her disappearance continues regardless of current charges, as prosecutors have emphasized several times. The German investigators are convinced that Christian B., who has a criminal record, kidnapped and murdered the girl. However, a body has not yet been found. (sda/dpa)
