A Swedish court has sentenced five teenagers to prison for the murder of an alleged rapist. The eldest suspect, who was an adult at the time of the crime, was given a life sentence, the Uppsala District Court announced on Wednesday. Two of his underage brothers were each sentenced to four years in prison. The youngest of the four brothers and his girlfriend must each serve three and a half years in juvenile detention for aiding and abetting.
Judge Lars Holmgård said the case, which became known in the media as a taxi murder, had the hallmarks of an execution. The girl, who was 15 at the time of the crime, had filed a report against a 26-year-old taxi driver for rape a month before the crime.
They hung him and emptied his account
According to news agency TT, she then lured him to a lonely area at the end of March with the prospect of a date. There the man was overpowered by her boyfriend and his three brothers. They forced him to reveal the access codes of his mobile phone and bank card, dragged him into the woods and hanged him. The man’s account was then deleted.
The suspects denied the crime. However, the court did not doubt her guilt based on chat conversations, DNA evidence and other evidence. However, it was believed that the girl and the youngest suspect were no longer at the crime scene at the time of the murder.
Regarding the allegation of rape against the girl, Judge Holmgård said the court had taken note of her statement. “But what happened there was not the actual subject of the trial,” he added. (SDA)
