In the case of a first-grade student who shot and seriously injured his teacher at an American elementary school, the boy’s mother has been sentenced to prison. A court in the American state of Virginia imposed a 21-month prison sentence on Wednesday because the woman lied about her marijuana use when buying a gun, the Washington Post reports. The 20-year-old had previously pleaded guilty. Her then six-year-old son later fired the gun at his teacher.
The boy took the gun to school in Newport News earlier this year and shot his teacher in the chest. The 25-year-old suffered life-threatening injuries. No one was hurt except her. According to police, the teacher managed to get all the students out of the classroom. She later sued the school for millions of dollars in damages in a civil lawsuit. The process is still ongoing.
The mother of the now seven-year-old boy is also accused by the Public Prosecution Service of neglecting her child. Sentencing on this charge is expected in December. School incidents involving such young shooters are also rare in the United States. The events in Newport News underscore the ongoing threat of gun violence in schools across the United States.
